005. (v2) [commentlog/closed]
[Ironhide needs a tune-up. Even Xanth, who knows nothing about mechanics, realizes this. Metal rusts, joints need oiling, and seaweed is terrible for gears. Xanth has also noticed that Ironhide isn't doing anything about these problems, and it can't be because he doesn't know how.
Okay, well, maybe it can. Xanth might be organic, but hell if he knows what really makes his body tick.
Still, Ironhide needs help, and Xanth thinks he might be able to provide it... if he could figure out how robots work. But he should start small, he reasons. This is what brings him to the stables.
Unfortunately, he can't find much for mechanical items or electronics besides this blue booth thing. This does not stop him from poking around inside it and around it, though, and he's making something of a racket.]

At least, that was until she'd discovered there were bikes in there - which was, of course, right before they'd disappeared. It figures. But now she checks in there on occasion, on the off chance that they'll be back, or something else will appear.
Today is one such trip, and she heads into the stables to poke around. And is probably distracted, by what sounds like someone having a lot of fun with the police box. She raises an eyebrow.]
Hello?
no subject
Ow!
[There's the sound of pained hissing, and then silence.
Two seconds later, Xanth peeks out of the police box. Upon spotting Ryn, he breaks out into an awkward, polite smile.]
Uhh, h-- he--
[he clears his throat]
H--Hi. Did, d-did you, uh, want to-- use-- th-this thing? [Whatever it is, whatever it does?]
no subject
Didn't mean to startle you.
[His question gets a raised eyebrow as she looks it over.]
Unless it's hiding an engine, I'll pass. Or unless that phone there actually works.
no subject
I-I, uh, I don't-- I don't think it d-does... m-much of anything, r-really.
[He says, disappointed. He'd really been hoping for more than a big blue tin can. He looks back to Ryn.]
I-I mean, I'm, I-I'm not an-- a-an expert, b-but... [He shrugs.]
no subject
No, I'm thinking you're right. It's not meant to, in any case, if it's an ordinary police box. Can't for the life of me figure out why the hell one would be here, but then, nothing else about this place makes sense.
[And another glare at the box.]
I think it replaced the bikes, though, which means it's just that much more fucking annoying.
no subject
[Oh, the joys of low technology. But even on the Elegante, Xanth never encountered a bicycle.
Funny how he knows more about robots than bikes - and he knows absolutely jack about robots.]
no subject
[She's already had to explain cars and karaoke to someone. Not fun.]
...uh.
[All right, give her a minute to figure out how to explain this. She doubts 'bicycle with an engine' will work.]
They're vehicles, people use them to get around when they don't want to walk. They've got a seat and handle bars over two wheels, and an engine to make them go fast.
no subject
He frowns, biting his lip, and looks to the ground. When he looks up, he fidgets a little, scratching his cheek.]
S-So, is, um, th-- th-the insides, what-- w-what makes them run -- i-is that... a-at all like-- l-like... robots?
[And even when he says it, he cringes a little, because it's such a dumb question.]
no subject
Probably depends on the robot, but I can't imagine it'd be too dissimilar. Unless you're talking about one with a shit ton of technology and computer chips and artificial intelligence and all that, then probably more different.
[And now she's slightly curious, and is actually thinking about this.]
But as far as for what makes them move - yeah, it'd probably be like a bike or a car.
no subject
Still, according to this woman, it's the start he thought it was.
Thoughtfully, he nods.]
W-Well, I-- I-I hope they get-- m-more in, soon. I-I want to... l-look in them.
no subject
You and me both, kid. I just found the damn things when they disappeared, barely had any time to look at them.
[Stupid castle.]
Are you a mechanic?
no subject
N-- No, but, I-I was, I was hoping to, uh...
["Become a mechanic" is pretty much what he wanted to do, but that just sounds dumb.]
L--Learn-- something. A-Anything.
no subject
Her interest is caught now, though.]
Yeah? D'you have someone teaching you, or are you planning on the 'poke at things and see what they do' method?
no subject
Th-the, uh, the-- second one. With-- a-as, as little... blowing up a-as I can-- manage.
no subject
Best be doing it far away from anything flammable, then. Explosions are usually a pretty good indicator you've done something wrong.
Do you want someone to teach you?
[She'll not be forcing it on him if he doesn't. Though she will be showing up in the stables more, keeping an eye on him.]
no subject
[He's trying not to get his hopes up, but it's much too late for that.]
I-I mean-- you don't have to, i-it's just, I'd-- I-I'd be pretty grateful. I mean I don't-- r-really know a-anything, a-about-- about mechanics, b-but I'm-- w-willing to learn?
[And he's going to stop talking now. Don't want to seem too desperate.]
no subject
Wouldn't have asked if I wasn't offering.
[Not when it came to mechanic stuff, anyway. And not when she wasn't actively trying to be an ass.]
You're the best kind of student, then. It's the ones that think they know shit and refuse to be told they're wrong that're the really</> fucking annoying ones.
no subject
Y-Yeah, no, I-- I-I wouldn't... be like that.
S-So, uh, when-- w-when could-- we start?
[He knows there's nothing really mechanic in the stables right now, but maybe she has some other stuff they could work on? Maybe?]
no subject
[Then she grimaces slightly.]
We could've done right now, if the damn bikes were still here. Don't suppose you've any idea if they'll be back?
no subject
N-- No. I-I don't-- I don't know w-what changes o-or when. O-Or even-- where a-anything goes, w-when it's not... you know. O-Out here.
no subject
Figures.
[She shrugs, jerking her head towards the far corner of the stables.]
There's some weird tank things back there. They don't have proper engines, but we can see what they've got. Probably better than nothing.
no subject
O--Okay.
I, um, I-I saw those, b-but I-- I-I didn't-- know what th-they were. I-I mean I've, I-I've seen the-- the bikes before, [even though he didn't know what they were], b-but not-- not those...
no subject
[Which means she's got no idea what the fuck tanks're supposed to have in them, she'd just peeked in earlier at the ones here and not seen much.]
They're weapons, they used to use them in wars and shit.
no subject
[Instruments of war, then. Like siege engines, maybe?]
W-Well, it, i-it couldn't hurt to... t-to look, r-right?
[Those are mechanics of some kind, after all. Better to look at everything, in case it's got some resemblance to Ironhide.]
no subject
[Not that she really knows if a real tank'd be any better, but whatever. She starts over to the corner of the stables.]
What made you want to start learning mechanics in the middle of a fucking castle?
no subject
O-Oh, uh, well-- I--
[There's a moment's hesitation here. Even if he said something as vague as "a friend needs work", it wouldn't be hard to tell which robot he meant. Revealing that sort of weakness about Ironhide to someone Xanth just met is... wrong.
But telling her all about his world and how it lacked mechanics, and then telling her about the Elegante and how it didn't, is just too much. But he has to say something -- he's already left her hanging for a good few seconds now.]
I'm-- c-curious?
[Smooth.]
no subject
Curious, huh?
[Her tone makes it obvious that she doesn't believe him for a second. But then she shakes her head.]
Don't worry about it. You're not wanting to tell me, don't. Long as it's not going to come back to bite me in the ass, I don't need to know why you wanted to learn.
no subject
N-No, it, i-it shouldn't. I-I mean I don't. I-I don't think i-it even could?
[Unless Ryn and Ironhide had some kind of quarrel, but that seems unlikely.
And then he remembers something.]
W-Wait, uh, I-- I-I never-- g-got your n-name?
no subject
Then we're square. Mechanic lessons, no questions asked.
[Oh, right. They should probably know names, if she's going to be teaching him.]
Ryn.
no subject
I-I'm-- Xanth. P--P-Pleased to-- meet you. A-And, uh, be-- t-taught-- by you.
[He sticks his hand out for a shake. It's only polite, really, and good to seal the deal on.]
no subject
Pleased to be meeting and teaching you as well. If nothing else, you're saving me at least a little from quite a bit of boredom.
[Ryn shakes his hand, grip firm and friendly. The touch sets off her abilities, making her aware of the bruise where he'd hit his head earlier - which is still annoying, it'd pinged them much earlier if she was back home. It's minor, but she heals it anyway during the handshake.]
no subject
Um. Was--
[He looks back to Ryn, hand no longer on his head but instead held just in front of himself, fingers loosely curled.]
Did-- d-did you... do-- s-something?
[He asks, at the risk of looking completely crazy.]
no subject
Figured you'd probably have an easier time learning without a knock to your head.
[It's occurring to her that the polite thing to do would've been to ask first, but ah, well.]
no subject
[He's got no idea how she did it, but it was probably magic of some kind. It's always magic.
He nods his head towards the tanks.]
Sh--sh-shall we?
